Subject: [IML] QUEST:DXF to Imagine object converter
I've been having problems importing DXF files into IFD 4.0, I really
need a smooth object but Imagine won't let me activate the phong switch
in the objects attributes - anyone know of a package (shareware or
freeware) which will do the job for me?

I had exactly the same problem when imported a Poser DXF which I had converted
to an Imagine object using Pixel 3D. The trick is to select the object, then
select the "Merge" menu option. Don't know why this works, but it does!

There was a nice article in Amazing Computing for the Amiga about smoothing
DXFs in PixelPro3D before saving them out as Imagine Objects for use in
Imagine. I would assume it would work the same way or very similar in the PC
version of PixelPro. Amazing Computing is still available at the better news
agents like Barnes&Noble, Bookstar and Waldenbooks.

Hi all
Clae here
Give me a break! I have both (Pixel 3D Amiga & PC) versions. NO! PC Pixel 3D
doesn't but Amiga does but not as good as Imagine's smoothing tool where you
have more control over the process. I read the article (gave it the once
over and even ran and object through) then discarded it; you got Imagine...
use it; doubt the writer has Imagine or it would have been a better article
(and out come on the smoothing of the object). And why would the writer use
Pixel 3D for smoothing when (as he states plus his screen shot shows) he
first loaded it into Lightwave? It does smoothing (better than Pixel 3D).
Now if you want to turn TTFs or PFBs into 3d texts... go get Pixel 3D; it's
the best over all for such... plus it converts formats... or changes bitmaps
into 3d objects (or logs), this is where it uses the smoothing. I like Pixel
3D (for $49.00 it's a great deal) but not for smoothing objects; use Imagine
or Lightwave for that.
And you should be able to do smoothing in IFW (I did it with the IFW demo).
Just make sure you load than F1 the object. Can be done in points, edge &
face modes as well -- both IFA & IFW.
Note on using Pixel 3D for text to 3D text-- PC version does both TTF & PFB;
BUT if you want to do it on the Amiga you need TypeSmith (which I have) to
turn TTFs into PFBs (or PFAs) than use Pixel Pro 3D Amiga (read the TTFs
right off a PC CD fonts disk on an Amiga's CD; has over 3,000 TTFs... I
ain't hurtin' for fonts :)). You can get TypeSmith 2.5 for $20.00 from Safe
Harbor (http://www.sharbor.com) or for $69.00 from Software Hut
(http://www.softhut.com) ... sure this is a no brainer to choose from...
unless your Homer Simpson. :) I use TypeSmith to make my own custom outline
Fonts, TTFs or PFBs etc, good grogram; should be in everyones 3d arsenal of
tools IMO.
BTW I have a subscription to Amazing Computing; knew about this maybe two
weeks now; no big deal. Use Imagine get Pixel 3d for fonts to 3d text. Note:
even though Pixel 3D began on the Amiga than went to PC (during the 'bad'
years) you can still get the last Amiga version from Software Hut
(http://www.softhut.com) FOR ONLY... $195.00... choke!... and I paid $69
when it first came out... well sort of; they sent me a flier on 'Such a
Deal!' bargain just for you intro thing; I bit... lucky me! :)
Now why does this look like more of a tutorial than a simple reply?
